I am not good at updating this blog! I'm active over at lj and on dreamwidth because there tends to be more discussion... but I know this blog is where a lot of people find me so I'll try to do a little better.

I started this diptych during the Zayed University residency, and finished it yesterday.

Insert ritual lament about my photography but actually I think it's time to blame the camera. The poor little lens can't do much for these bigger pieces. Also I have a really nice monitor since my old one died, which is indeed really nice, but it shows me the bad very well.

I finally went with a really high gloss on this series, because the wax medium which gave the water that cloudiness was proving fragile to handle-- and the glossy galkyd is nearly like laminating the work in terms of providing protection. But it makes for a lot of shine to deal with... you can see the shine in this angle photo, and I took the shot practically in the dark!

Time to make the decision about the trees, right now they are just underpainted in white for texture.

The whole painting will get glazed which will bring down/integrate the Disney color quite a bit... ok, now I can see just how to go about the trees. Thank you digital camera, computer, internet, blog. :)

I am calling these "apparent horizons", which google tells me is a technical term for the intersection of land and sky as seen by a viewer, and also the locus of furthest points from which photons are unable to escape a static black hole. But these paintings are mostly just affectionate. I did seven.

This painting seems to be the world I want to fly away to live in at the moment.

Have decided water tower=secular humanist symbol for goddess.

New show which opens a week from Saturday at Blue Heron Gallery in Liberty IN finally has a title: terra firma.

Am building a web page for this show as I get work photographed. Have page up for this painting at least.

This one is still very rough-- 48 x 24". It doesn't balance yet, it has a ways to go.

Working title is "tower thingy", Google tells me it is more properly known as an elevated water storage tank.

They are popular in these parts-- this is of my favorite of all the water tanks around here.

1) Am moving this summer (Aug. 1) for one year to Monmouth, IL, USA. To find Monmouth when coming from the east, overshoot Peoria by 70 miles and you are pretty close.

I've been there. It is super-cute, and for once I am getting to move to a small town in advance of Walmart-- so the downtown is still bustling and filled with real businesses not empty storefronts. There is a coffeeshop, not Starbucks, and real Mexican food to be had, and an active arts nonprofit organization with exhibit space both in Monmouth and nearby Galesburg. More details as I get them.

2) Do not want to pack up all this art for move. Thus, studio sale begins.

Right now I have ten works on the sale page-- all older
stuff-- my most recent work certainly is for sale but not at these SUPER-SLASHED PRICES!!!1011111 I will add more works to the sale page as I dig them out and dust them off.

I love this one ancient Greek vase painting so much that I decided to paint it four times big and see if I couldn't get it out of my system. I don't think I have. I wonder if anyone wants to give me a show of 100 Eris paintings. Anyway, here are the first two:

This image of Eris (Discord) is very close to an Attic black-figure cup
interior ca 560 B.C. According to Hesiod, Eris was dual in nature. She inspired
envy (and thus harder work) from lazy farmers who gazed upon the full barns of
their neighbors. She also roamed battlefields as the companion of the war god
Ares, and with her golden apple set the stage for Troy.

What looks like "epis" beneath the figure is a detail from the vase painting,
actually her name; the Greek letter r looks like a p.

Lysistrata is an ancient Greek political comedy by Aristophanes. The painting title refers to the line numbers of the play. The full passage is as follows (tr. Jeffrey Henderson):
